The Essence Course - What is it?
Essence is an exploration of contemporary spirituality which looks towards a lifestyle integrating body mind and spirit.  Its style is laid-back and non-threatening.  Rob Frost helped develop the course which began as a theological exploration involving Professor John Drane and Christian leaders.  It has now been running since 2001 and been revised and updated along the way.  Rob Frost writes “At every phase of the development of Essence [I have been amazed at] how hungry committed Christians are for something less cerebral and more experiential in their faith.  Time and again, in developing these materials, Christian participants have been overwhelmed by the presence of God and moved to tears by the depth of sharing they experienced.  Many have said that they have found Essence stimulating and refreshing.”
What is it like?
Essence aims to give an experiential introduction to the Christian faith in a culturally relevant way.  Each week the programme takes participants on a journey of self-discovery as they investigate Christian perspectives through different activities.  The hand on approach encourages individual participation and the overall objective is to encourage all of the group members to make a personal journey towards God.  The series takes popular concepts from New Age spirituality and refocuses them from a Christian perspective.

On Saturday morning 22nd November we begin a pilot Essence Course. This is open to all church members who would like to find out what the course is about for their own interest or before recommending it to family and friends.

Claiming Your Expenses - Want to make your donations worth more?
Quite often church members buy items for the church (eg flowers, refreshments) or incur travel expenses, and do not bother to reclaim the cost from the parish.  The church would be better off if an expense form was completed with a sales receipt, and the cost repaid by the PCC.  Then a voluntary donation of the cost can be made as a one-off gift to the church, which can claim the extra Gift Aid tax refund.  (this only applies if you are a UK tax-payer)

Essence – Who is it for?
Essence is a 6 session interactive programme to stimulate a deeper spiritual life, drawing from the teachings of Jesus and the Christian mystics.  People outside the church are very open to what is on offer in Essence.  One lady in her sixties said, “I have been into Buddhism and Eastern religion for many years, but I have never encountered anything as rich as this.  You’ve challenged all my preconceptions about Christianity.  And the love here, I’ve not known anything like it.”
Although Essence is a tool for Christian mission it is not exclusively for non-Christians.  A wide range of existing Christian fellowship groups have benefited enormously from the Essence experience.
