ST. MICHAEL, BROOME
Broome is a long, narrow village bordered on one side by the River Waveney with the majority of housing concentrated along Yarmouth Road, running parallel to the river and in Sun Road. It has a pub, The Artichoke and a well maintained Village Hall. Once a month there’s a coffee morning: with a raffle, run by the Village Hall Committee. The village is served by the local shop and Post Office in Ditchingham.
The church of St Michael: beautifully located in the centre of a field about a mile from the village centre dates from the early 14th and 15th Centuries. It has no running water or electricity but this does not deter the congregation. There is a good sound and loop system in place (run off car batteries) and we have coffee served after every service when 90% stay for social interaction. Heating and lighting is by Calor Gas and we think we have the warmest church in the area!
The PCC decided to run a breakfast club for younger children in the village hall on the first Saturday of each month. This has maintained steady numbers and now more parents are staying to have a cuppa and a chat and to meet with others. Our regular helpers are a mixture of church and non-church villagers.
Ditchingham and Broome have a combined prayer group which meets weekly. There are two daytime home groups – one meets twice and the other once a month, and an evening one which meets every Tuesday. They are open to all but consist in the main of Ditchingham and Broome people.
Currently Broome hold one major fund-raising event yearly: Jazz in the Park on the August Bank Holiday Sunday.
As in the rest of the benefice we are committed to preaching the Good News about Jesus Christ every Sunday and through any means possible in our daily lives.
